DOS programs often call ALLOC twice, first attempting to allocate FFFFh paragraphs, which will fail and return the maximum available size. The available maximum is then allocated in the next ALLOC call. Because DOS isn’t a multi-tasking OS, this simple approach reliably works.

And while I do intend to eventually try to get as good a game-board display out of the TMS9918A chip as I can, one of the things that I am taking from this is that I should also sketch out a bunch of way stations along the way, where a “reasonable” designer might conclude that this was sufficient for the complexity of the application itself.
